How to Discover and Use Your Character Strengths

Published on 28 April 2025 at 13:41

Here’s a little truth bomb:
You already have incredible strengths — not just the “skills” you’ve picked up at work, but the natural ways you show up in the world.

You just might not be giving yourself enough credit. (We all do that, right?)

What Are Character Strengths?

Character strengths are the positive traits that make you... well, you.
Things like creativity, kindness, bravery, leadership, perseverance, humor, curiosity — the list goes on.

And here’s the kicker:
The more you use your character strengths on a daily basis, the happier and more fulfilled you’ll feel.
It’s backed by positive psychology research!

How to Find Your Top Strengths

Here’s an easy way to start:

  1. Take the VIA Survey
The VIA Character Strengths survey is free and super insightful. (You can take it here if you haven't already.)
It ranks your strengths in order and gives you a snapshot of your top ones.

  2. Reflect on Compliments You Get
What do people thank you for?
What do they say you’re “naturally good at”?

  3. Think About When You Feel Your Best
When you’re “in the zone,” what qualities are you using? Are you being creative, strategic, compassionate, brave?

Why It Matters

When you lean into your natural strengths at work and in life, everything feels lighter, easier, and more aligned.
Instead of forcing yourself to be who you think you should be, you get to show up as who you already are.

And that’s where the real magic happens.
