How to Find Your Ikigai (Your Reason for Being)

Published on 28 April 2025 at 14:03

If you’re dreaming about a career change — or even just a shift toward something that feels more meaningful — let me introduce you to one of my favorite concepts: Ikigai.

Ikigai (pronounced ee-kee-guy) is a Japanese word that roughly translates to “your reason for being.”
It’s the beautiful spot where four things overlap:

  • What you love

  • What you’re good at

  • What the world needs

  • What you can get paid for

When you find your Ikigai, work stops feeling like a grind and starts feeling like an extension of who you are.

How to Play with Your Ikigai

  1. Make Four Lists
    Sit down and brainstorm:

  • What do I love doing?

  • What am I really good at?

  • What problems could I help solve for others?

  • What could I potentially get paid for?

  1. Look for Overlaps
Notice where your answers start to intersect.
That’s where your Ikigai magic lives.

  2. Experiment and Stay Curious
    Finding your Ikigai isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a journey.
Try things out. Volunteer. Take a class. Start a side hustle. Explore — you’re allowed to pivot and adjust as you learn more about yourself.

Why It Matters

Midlife is the perfect time to reassess what you really want from your career and your life.
Ikigai gives you permission to build something meaningful — and yes, something that supports you too.

The best part?
It’s never too late to start.
